A note from the Society PR and Marketing Committee

By Robb Ollett, CHAIR, SOCIETY PR/MKT. COMMITTEE

Greetings from north of the Golden Gate Bridge -

As is my practice, I've gleaned the plans from your fellow DVPs from the Society Board book. I hope you find the ideas stimulating and can weave them into your existing work plan. It may also serve as a checklist to see where you are in relation other district planning.

  • E-mail and telephone contact with each chapter at least once per quarter.
  • Breakfast meetings at regional and district conventions with PR/BE to answer questions and check-in.
  • Media releases to hometown papers on top competitors and winners after each convention.
  • Media releases on those attending music schools, especially non-Barbershoppers and music educators.
  • Articles on providing a positive Society image for quartet and choruses especially for performances.
  • Articles on how to promote events and participation at other group events.
  • Contacting chapters with no chapter bulletins or known PR programs (versus waiting for a chapter to contact you!).
  • Working with membership DVP on ways to treat guests and new members (what a concept!).
  • District Web sites and promoting district activities.
  • Placing certain district publication items on the Web site for emphasis.
  • Special newsletter to all chapter presidents after Board and House of Delegates meetings, plus convention highlights (even some e-mail distribution).
  • Helping extension sites with publicity, news releases and self-promotion.
  • Providing mid-year PR/Mkt. COTS classes.
  • Securing candidates as replacements for existing officers.
  • Analyzing advertisements in district bulletins for effectiveness and costs.
  • Searching for new district editor.
  • Increasing the number of chapter bulletins by calling chapters directly.
  • Broadcast e-mails with periodic information and latest news items.
  • Work with convention host chapter to invite patrons and music educators to convention or music schools.

Until next time, thanks for your hard work in promoting the Society.
