Buffalo Bills display at Kansas City

By Clyde Taber, MEMBER, ARCHIVE COMMITTEE

Heritage Hall Museum curator, Beverly Brandl McCumber, created the 2000 Museum Traveling Exhibit featuring the Buffalo Bills quartet. This is the 50th anniversary of the Buffalo Bills International Quartet Championship year. The display included photographs of the Buffalo Bills quartet in their winning year and later years. Also on display was the uniform the quartet wore in 1950. Included also were "The Music Man" posters, a written commentary about the quartet and show programs where the Buffalo Bills performed. The Buffalo Bills became world famous in their portrayal of the school board in the Music Man musical on Broadway.

Dick Grapes sang baritone in the Gold Medallist quartet and is the only surviving member. Dick was kind enough to loan his memorabilia for the display. It consisted of several large loose-leaf manuals filled with show programs, photographs, old hotel and meal receipts, newspaper articles, and other interesting artifacts. The Museum and the Archive Committee thank Dick Grapes for the generous loan of his material for display.

The display received a great deal of attention by convention attendees. Dick Grapes spent time at the display talking to many members and being photographed. If you were in Kansas City and missed the Heritage Hall Museum display you missed one of the attractions of the convention. Visit the Heritage Hall Museum web sit at www.barbershop.org/museum.
