THE BARBERSHOP HARMONY SOCIETY, started in 1938 when
a lawyer (see, they are good for something!) by the name of
O. C. Cash got together with some friends to revive the lost art of
male voices singing in close harmony. Being a lawyer, he came up
with the mother of all names, "The Society for the Preservation and
Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America."
We continue to use that mouthful of a moniker even though the Barbershop Harmony Society, as it is more commonly and less awkwardly called, now spans several continents and claims some 32,000 members including 3,000 quartets. Sponsoring annual contests, workshops, and education programs at public schools, the Society's motto is "Keep the whole world singing!"
On the Society's web site you can read more about the various members and activities, learn about the history of barbershop music, find a chapter near you (hint: if you live in Cheyenne, you already found us!) or learn about becoming a member.
