on "polecat" songs. Ed McKenzie did a great job keeping
the program interesting and we all pitched in to work toward the charter.
Again, with John Schneider's help, the paperwork was completed and 31 names
were sent in with the charter application in June 1989.
The charter members were: Claude Skinner,
C. S. "Bo" Allen, Pete D. Teel, Dennis M. Driscoll,
Daniel M. Marks, Joseph G. Massey, Darrell P.
Freeman, Ed A. McKenzie, Norman D. Homburg,
Mike M. Lewis, Donald H. Lewis, John M. Lewis,
Donald T. Wackwitz, Merrill L. Green, Brian
Magouirk, Henry G. Wickes, Jr., Johnathan C.
Marner, Bud Sutton, Bob Miess, Scott Norris, F'red
Maddox, Robert A. Wattenbarger, Greg Harvey, Brent
Hairston, Arthur L. Wright, Frank Shannon, Timothy P.S. Birdwell, Bill
Hamilton, Ronnie Woods, Jack T. Madeley, and D. Michael Holmes. The italic
names continue as active members of our chapter. With the chorus starting
to learn a few notes and most of the words to most songs and Dennis Driscoll
getting a little more comfortable with our sound, we performed in several
churches and for a district Kiwanis convention. That performance thrilled
us so much, we decided to start working on a show for the next year. Since
our sponsoring chapter, Houston Tidelanders were available on April 7,
1990 and wanted to help us out on our first show, that is the day we selected. |
Our officers for 1990 were headed by President Pete
Teel and we rolled up our sleeves getting ready for "Harmony Holiday" on
April 7, featuring the Tidelanders. Ed McKenzie was our first show chairman
and did a superjob getting the new chorus ready to perform. Merrill Green
got the Bryan High School baseball caps which were a different color for
home and away games and we had two teams on stage April 7 for It's a Beauttful
Day for a Baligame. Also on that show we performed Row, Row, Row and I'd
Love to Live in Loveland. The Sounds in Accord (Ed McKenzie, Merrill Green,
Bo Allen, Dennis Driscoll) sang a couple of numbers and then we turned
to show over to the Houston Tidelanders. Boy, what a show they put on!.
They had over seventy on stage plus four quartets. They just did a super
job.
Perry Baker, Southwestern District President, presented the Bryan/College
Station Chapter charter during this show.
At the afterglow, all the quartets got another shot and it was good.
In addition, Asa and Bonnie Hoffpauir came over from Lake Charles, LA and
brought a quilted bear toy made to look like a barbershopper. Sixty-one
barbershoppers bought $1.00 chances and Henry Wickes took the bear home.
The $61.00 was sent to the Institute of Logopedics.
We decided to enter regional contest that year in Houston and started
getting ready to compete with Yankee Doodle Dandy and I'd Love to Live
in Loveland. Our front row got their first taste of choreography for Yankee
Doodle Dandy and for three months we spent more time laughing at each other
