performance there before the building was destroyed. The
headline quartets for that last show were the Mark IV and the Merry Mugs
(Kansas City). During the 1970's, we continued to produce
barbershop shows for the public. The chapter held "bush league"
barbershop quartet contests in
various parks throughout Amarillo. Then in the 1980's, though membership
sagged, the chapter continued to present shows with some outstanding
headline quartets. However the shows became less frequent. During this
time the Lubbock and Midland chapters assisted us in producing shows for
the public. As the chapter moved into the 90's we suffered problems
of growth and retention of
membership. Singers have come and gone and
directors have come and gone, but the chapter continues to survive. |
Throughout the years we've met at the old Community Center at 6th and
Carolina, the old VFW Hall, the Women's Federated Clubrooms, the Santa
Fe Building, the Polk Street Methodist Church, St. Stephen's Methodist
Church, St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, St. Paul's Methodist Church and
otherplaces. Some directors of the Amarillo chorus included Willard "Buttercup"
Grantham, Joe Coleman, Bill Connack, Bill Devers, WarrenTuckness, Bill
Rawlings, Pat Virden, Thomas Robertson, Tracey Shirk, Dr. George Biffie,
and Dwight Elliott, our present direction Other society quartets that have
performed in Amarillo have been the Stage Door Four (Dallas),The Salt Flats
(Salt Lake City), Standing Room Only (San Antonio), Knights of Harmony
(Dallas), and the Four Nubbins (Spencer, Iowa). |
