He was joined by gold medalists Jerry Fairchild, Dale Deiser and Mo Rector. The quartet, with Frank on lead, performed his favorite, "Don't Cry Little Girl" stopping in mid-song to exclaim "Hot Dawg, Ain't That Purty!!"  His ad libs and  charm  won  the audience that night as shown by the lengthy, heartfelt standing ovation that followed. He was a highlight of the week and even inspired applause and autograph hounds on the way back to the hotel.
His family later wrote and  expressed  their gratitude. The four days J. Frank spent in Kansas City were the happiest time for him since the death of his wife. He reportedly sang all the way home.
J. Frank Rice passed away on July 9, 1995 at the age of 95 and has now joined Alice. Their gravestone reads, "Sweethearts Forever".
