1970's and 1980's and were Plateau A Division 6 Chorus Champs
in 1992 & 1996.
In the early 50's members were beginning to get acquainted with the
activities and people outside the Shreveport Chapter. Milton Herbert, Ernie
Turner, Nelson "Skinny " Jones and Claude Spinks attended the International
Competition in Kansas City were the "Four Teens" won. A couple of years
later, Tom Helzer of Dallas, picked up Ernie Turner and Justin Breithaupt
and they drove to Washington, D.C., for the competition there. Since 1976
a chapter member as been in attendance at ali the internationals and most
of the Mid-winter conventions. Jim Stone has served as president of AHSOW
(a subsidiary of SPEBSQSA) in 1985-1985.
The Shreveport Chapter was originally a part of the Dixie District.
The district also included Florida and Arkansas at that time. During the
mid 1950's Shreveport was instrumental in having International transfer
all the territory in Louisiana west of the Mississippi to the Southwestern
District. A bus trip was planned to the Southwestern District Contest and
Convention in Dallas soon after the transfer. Once again Shreveport members
were getting acquainted with |
barbershopping outside of their own town. This expansion
of their interests led to the start of chapters in Texarkana, USA, in 1961,
the re-start of Longview in 1966 and the start ofMonroein 1971.
An outstanding example of their interest and help with other chapters
occurred in 1976 when the Shreveport Chapter, along with the Nacogdoches
and Longview Chapters presented the "Salute to America" show in all three
towns. The chapters combined and Ralph Ribble directed this large chorus
for a truly outstanding show.
The Shreveport/Northwest Louisiana Chapter has been very generous with
its members they have spread around the country for over 40 years.
Many fine barbershoppers began their careers in Shreveport and moved on
to other chapters. Because of the size and economy of our area, rarely
has a barbershopper moved to Shreveport but many have moved away. The migration
of the oil company offices to Houston, corporate promotions to Dallas,
Memphis, California, etc., has forced the chapter to introduce new people
to the hobby in order to stay alive. Through the years, active membership
has ranged between 20 and 30 members with a roster of 30 to 40. |
