San Angelo has been exposed to barbershopping
for many years, even before the formation of the "first" official chapter
in 1955. This group folded after only a couple of years and another charter
was issued in 1970. That group also diminished to the point of no return
after 2 or 3 years.
The current chapter was chartered in 1979 with the arrival of Bruce
Clark from the Abilene, Texas chapter in 1976. Bruce, along with long time
local barbershoppers Bryan Mahon, Tom Allison, Jim Rasor, Paul Drummond,
Chester Bobo and others were determined to build a strong and ever-growing
chapter in San Angelo. With the help of the Goodfellow Air Force Base and
Angelo State University, among other sources, the membership started growing
steadily.
Bruce Clark was elected musical director, a position he held until
1991. when he retired. Bruce's son, Mark was elected to replace his dad
and remains the musical director in 1995. With sflght fluctuations, the
chapter has maintained a membership of approximately 40 to 45 members.
Today the chapter has become successful in many areas, with credit going
to those men who started the current chapter with a solid, strong foundation
which would have everlasting effects in San Angelo. Chapter awards include:
The "Ralph Ribble |
Outstanding Small ChapterAward" -1989 and 1994,
and "silver status" for contributions to Heartspring. Other chapter accomplishments
include having three chapter members serve on the district board of directors
at the same time in 1992.
Musical awards include
-winning the Small Chorus Championship (a record 5 times) 1987, 1990, 1991,1992
and 1995, being Division I Chorus Champions, and several successful chapter
quartets.

to their local charity, the West Texas Rehabilitation Center and the society

the area and from all over the nation. |
