Speaking of origins of the New Braunfels chapter... it was
still-born twice. The father being Mo Rector (1960's). Jim Hazel who had
moved from the mid-west, was the successful founder of the chapter in 1973.
V.J. Lowrance (chairman of choral music in Seguin, Texas school system).
was the first director. The first rehearsals were held in a historically
planned home entifled "The Hinman House". The chorus adopted the name,
"South Texas Sound".
The early years were a blend of fun, excitement, the thrill of achieving
what was then described as "ringing a chord" Our group was about 10 strong
initially. Our mentors were some members of the Chordsmen.
Though small, less than 30, The South Texas |
Sound has presented an annual Cavalcade of Harmony
every year minus one. The Suntones were the headliners of our first show.
The Vocal Majority appeared on our stage just before winning their ilrst
international gold medals.
A lack of tenors has limited our quartetting. Registered quartets have
been 'The Hill Country Genflemen", "The One and Only" (and they were),
and "Those Were The Days".
Our most famous member-visitor-generous arranger is Mo Rector.
Fast Forward - The South Texas Sound will be 18 plus singers in Houston
on the September 26th (1995 division). We have won the Division II small
chorus plateau two years in a row and hope this will be the third. |
