.Dillion the Villian". Since then the annual show themes
have included such exotic locales as a medieval dungeon "Harmony Behind
Bars", a grade school classroom School Days", Soviet Russia "Barbershop
and the KGB", ancient Rome "Barbershop Goes to the Roman Senate", a fany
tale cottage "Off-White and the 17 Dwarfs", a camp fire on the Chishoim
Trail "Barbershop Out West", and a small town street corner "Barbershop
with the Spit-n-Whitfle Club". These scripts all came from the talented
(but crazed) mind of Johnny Horn.
This change of format has helped to make our annual show one of the
best attended performances in town (more people attend our annual show
than go to the symphony performances).
The first time the Lawtonalres participated in competition was the
district contest in September 1965 at Amarillo, Texas. The Lawtonaires
Chorus won the Small Chorus Contest in 1981. A quartet from the chorus,
the "Vocal Orchestration Corporation", won the 1981 SWD Quartet contest
(we had both trophies In the chapter for one year). Lawton Chapter has
hosted three division contests (Lawton - 1970, Lawton - 1980, Duncan -
1994).
We've had several fine directors through the
years:
1964 Bill Crow
1964-1966 Jim Bagby
1966-1967 Oliver Jones
1967-1969 Jim Bagby
1969-1984 Larry Campbell
1984-1989 Larry Campbell/Joel Blomgren
1989-1995 Joel Blomgren
1995-present Larry Campbell |
We are also very proud to have earned the Outstanding
Small Chorus Award in 1978, and in singing competition, the Small Chorus
Championship in 1978 and again in 1981.
Several of our members have given special efforts to our chapter. Jim
Bagby directed the Lawtonalres Chorus at one time. He also sang lead in
the "Noise Boys" quartet. He then moved on to greater glory where he sang
in the "Rural Route 4" quartet going on to win the International gold medal
in 1986.
Brian Hogan joined the chapter at the tender age of 14. After singing
in several quartets in Lawton (including the "Noise Boys" and "Sound Beginning")
he moved to Oklahoma City. There he has sung in several quartets, e.g..
"OK 4", "7th Avenue". He is currenfly the chorus director of the newly
formed Central Cities Chorus of the greater Oklahoma City area.
(Editor's note) Not to be overlooked is the contribution of the Vocal
Orchestration Corporation. Since winning the Southwestern District quartet
championship in 1981 they have continued tope~rm and remain the longest
active past champion with original members. To their credit, all four members,
Tommy Horn, Troy Hamilton, I£uTy Campbell and Bobby Richardson, have
served the chapter in many ways and remain the core of the organization.
Their variety of music also sets them apart as outstanding entertainers
on any stage.
Lawton Chapter has sponsored a total of five
additional chapters. Weatherford, OK in 1966,
Chickasha, OK in 1968, Wichita Falls, Th in 1969,
Altus, OK in 1975 and a new chapter - Central Cities
(Oklahoma City area) 1995. |
