The Lake Charles Chapter was founded by two men, who along
with a few others enjoyed singing in the barbershop style. These two men,
Jim Holcomb and C.S. "Bo" Allen, were instrumental in getting the chapter
off and running.
The chapter was licensed on October 10, 1974 and was named the "PELICAN
STATESMEN". Jim Holcomb was the first president and he did a fine job of
getting the chapter moving in the right direction. Bo Allen was our Director
of Music for ten years and along with some capable assistant directors
helped train us to sing in the barbershop style.
Two men who deserve special recognition for exceptional service and
dedication to the chapter are Oscar Welsh and Jim RIgsby. Oscar served
as our secretary for ten years and did an outstanding job in a thankless
position. Jim served as our treasurer for almost eighteen years and did
a wonderful job keeping us in the black and making sure we stayed legal.
Keith Cayton was our second Director of Music and he |
served the chapter well in leading us to the Division
III Championship in 1987. Over the years Keith served in almost all elected
offices and was instrumental in the preparation of the annual show each
year. Keith Cayton is a barbershopper's barbershopper!
Our chapter had a three year period of inactivity from 1990 until 1993,
but Tom and Andy Jacobson were instrumental in getting the chapter active
again. Andy Jacobson served the next two and one half years as our Director
of Music.
Our contest highlights include winning the Division III Championship
in 1987. We also competed in District Contest in 1986 and 1987.
Perhaps our best show was in 1983 when we had 42 men on stage and 1750
partons in attendance. Our largest audience was in 1986 when had the pleasure
of singing the national anthem for 8,000 fans at the McNeese State University
vs LSU basketball game. We also sang for three other games |
