Barbershop harmony came to the Texoma area early in the
spring of 1965 when Drew Browne, an optometrist and barbershopper in Lubbock,
relocated to Sherman. Mter securing the consent of Dan Hodges, music director
of the First Baptist Church, to direct a barbershop chorus, Browne placed
a two column inch display ad in the local paper on Friday, March 5, 1965.
The ad invited men interested in barbershop harmony to meet Sunday, March
7, at 3:00 p.m. at Finley Cultural Center. A large number of men attended
that meeting and were introduced to barbershop by the Town North Tiger
Chorus and its four chapter quartets under the direction of Ralph Ribble
and president Fred Wiese. The chorus presented an impressive preview of
their 1965 show program which was coming up in four weeks.
Following that Sunday afternoon, weekly meetings were begun at Finley
Center. In ten months the required 35 members were on the roll and, under
the sponsorship of the Town North |
Chapter, the chapter was chartered on December 31, 1965.
Browne was president and Hodges was music director. Other first officers
were Cleon Reese
- Program VP. L. A. Seitz - Membership V P, Don Hudgeons - Secretary,
and George Silha - Treasurer. Only three of the original thirty-five, Seitz.
Elvis Miller, and C.R. Woodrow, are still members of the chapter.
The chapter's first show was In April, 1966, with the Doo-Dads. It
was so much fun, the young chapter scheduled another show in the fall of
1966 with the Potentates from Fort Worth. It was three more years before
the chapter was able to sponsor its third show in April, 1969, with the
help again and appearance of the Town North Chorus and its quartet, the
Roustabouts.
Membership has had Its ups and downs vaiying between 15 and 40 members.
A chapter high point was attained in 1979 under the leadership of President
Tim Peake, Membership VP Miller, and Director Seitz, when the chapter received
