T. J. Barranger was born in 1978 in Somerville, New Jersey. His parents were both active in community theater and encouraged him from an early age to make performing a part of his life. He began singing solos in school talent shows and in church at the age of seven, after his first school music teacher noticed he had near-perfect pitch and an uncanny ability to quickly learn and retain melodies.

T. J. started acting in community theater productions at age ten, and continued acting for the next eleven years, before leaving the theater to assume the directorship of the SomerTones barbershop chorus. His New Jersey stage credits include Theseus in A Midsummer Night's Dream, Jack Ross in A Few Good Men, Dolan in Mister Roberts, and supporting parts in Peter Pan, Gypsy, The Elephant Man, University, and A Flea In Her Ear. In addition to his stage work, he also played the lead part in an independent short film simply entitled " " (Quotes).

In September 1994, T. J. transferred as a sophomore to a new high school, and discovered that this made him ineligible to participate in the school's choir program. At the suggestion of a fellow church choir member (and barbershopper), he began singing with the Somerset Hills, NJ chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Having found his musical niche, he officially joined the Society in January 1995 at the age of sixteen.

Since then, T. J. has remained active in the hobby, serving for three years as Music Vice-President and five years as Director of the Somerset Hills chapter. Under his direction, the SomerTones were named Small Chorus Champion of the Mid-Atlantic District's Northern Division in 2001 and 2004, and twice competed in the fall district chorus competition. In 1998 he was named the Somerset Hills chapter's Barbershopper of the Year, and in 2005 he was presented the Artie Dove Chapter Spirit Award, in recognition of his efforts to encourage quartet singing.

T. J. has been an active quartet singer for most of his barbershop career. He sang lead in The Pick of the Litter and The In Crowd before making the jump to tenor in Voice Activation (2001 Northern Division 6th Place), At Random (2003 Atlantic Division 3rd Place), Vocaholics (2004 M-AD Prelims Finalist; 2004 Northern Division 2nd Place), and Direct Hit (2006 M-AD Southern Division Champion).

In February 2005, T. J. accepted the directorship of the Anne Arundel, Maryland chapter. After just three short months at the helm, T. J. directed the Sons of the Severn to the Intermediate Chorus Championship in the Mid-Atlantic District's Western Division. He spent more than six months commuting weekly from New Jersey to direct the chorus before finally relocating to the Baltimore area that September. Under T. J.'s direction, the Sons of the Severn have won two Division Plateau Chorus Championships, and have qualified for the fall district chorus competition every year.

By day, T. J. works as an underwriting technician for one of the world's leading commercial insurers. He resides in Central Maryland with his wife, Mandy, and their two birds, "Oscar" and "Tahiti".
