April 2002

Welcome Guests!

Welcome to all our guests. We hope we’ve given you a small glimpse of our Barbershopping hobby – and that we’ve whetted your appetite. As you should know by now, we love to sing – and we’d love to have you come out and harmonize with us on any Monday night. If you have any questions about our chapter, our music, our organization – anything at all – just ask.

Recording Session

For the past several years the chorus has been recording our repertoire – for use in promoting the chapter, for use in parades, as a way of improving our singing, and for our own enjoyment. We are hoping to tape again this year on Monday May 13th 7:30 pm (assuming we can book the studio – otherwise we’ll be taping two weeks later on Monday May 27th.) We’ll be doing all chorus repertoire that we should already know well from the show.

Watch for announcements at practice or during the week. The studio is New Music Productions, 603B Park Street, Regina, just north of Ross Avenue.

Annual Show a Success!!

Wow – another successful show – thanks to the hard work and commitment to a long list of individuals. From staging to music, from makeup to lighting, from tickets to sound, from afterglow to brunch – quartet members and chorus members and non-members – we all pulled together to present a successful and wonderfully entertaining show package for our audience. The finances and statistics are still being gathered – but perhaps the best indicator of a show’s success lies with our audience – and from all reports, everyone had a great time!

So, congratulate yourself and the guys beside you – you all did a great job!!

A special "Thank You" to our wives and significant others for your help and patient support not only for our Annual Show but throughout the entire year.

Every Monday is a Guest Night!

Executive Meeting

Our fourth executive meeting of the year was at the home of Wayne and Alice Keys with six members in attendance – Ron, Wayne, Dave, Stuart, John and Bruce.

$$$$’s

Anyone with show money please turn it in to Stuart Reiley or John Leitch (along with any unsold tickets) so that we can wrap up final reports for the show. And if you sold advertising for our show program please make sure that you take our supporters a copy of our program with their ad and thank them for their support.

A.R.I. - A Cappella Radio International

The best in barbershop, doo-wop, and contemporary a cappella is on the air every month on A Cappella Radio International. The Society webpage has links to an online archive of five years of great music – great for listening while working on newsletters – or any time - www.spebsqsa.org/ari.

Clear Lake

Don’t forget to mark your calendar for the first weekend in June. Each year, the Land o’ Lakes district hosts the Clear Lake mini-HEP music school at Sportsman’s Park in Onanole, Manitoba, just outside Riding Mountain National Park.

This year, District quartet champs, Innovation, will be providing coaching along with the faculty of Kirk Young, Sandy Bergenson, Mark Magness, Judy Windey and Bruce O’Dell.

The weekend includes quartet coaching, a workshop on quartet performances; individual classes in vocal production, presentation and much more; a quartet contest and Saturday night show with performances by all the quartets and Innovation.

This is a great musical weekend – one of the unfortunately few opportunities we have to meet and sing with our fellow barbershoppers – but above all this is an extraordinary learning experience.

The chapter picks up the $75 registration fee for members in good standing – this includes four meals, lots of singing and a great staff. We usually arrange carpools for transportation, and there are lots of cabins just inside Riding Mountain National Park as well as camping facilities at Sportsman’s Park.

Make sure you sign up on the commitment list that’s circulating. We need to let the organizers know how many will be attending and we will have to commit to paying registrations for those numbers. So check your calendar and sign up for this great weekend.

Congratulations, Gord!

Way back when the Regina Chapter performed its very first show in 1961, one of our current members was there on stage – and in fact he’s been on stage for each and every show since. Congratulations to Gord Gardiner, for this magnificent achievement.

Chapter Elections

Chapter Elections are coming up on Monday June 10th – and that means that the nominating committee (Lynn Lowes and Dave Pearce) will be approaching you to assist in the running of your chapter.

As we are a small chapter we rely heavily on the support and participation of every member – but on the flip side, since we are a small chapter, the duties of each chapter officer aren’t excessively time consuming or onerous.

Please consider saying "yes" when the nominating committee approaches you – or better still, approach them and let them know which positions you’d be interested in helping your chapter with.

Steven Spielberg was discussing his new project - an action docudrama about famous composers starring top movie stars.

Sylvester Stallone, Steven Segal, Bruce Willis, and Arnold Schwarzenegger were all present. Spielberg strongly desired the box office 'oomph' of these superstars, so he was prepared to allow them to select whatever composers they would portray, as long as they were very famous.

"Well," started Stallone, "I've always admired Mozart. I would love to play him."

"Chopin has always been my favorite, and my image would improve if people saw me playing the piano," said Willis. "I'll play him."

"I've always been partial to Strauss and his waltzes," said Segal. "I'd like to play him."

Spielberg was very pleased with these choices. "Sounds splendid."

Then, looking at Schwarzenegger, he asked, "Who do you want to be, Arnold?"

So Arnold says........ "I'll be Bach."
