Seasons Greetings

Season’s Greetings

and Happy Holidays to you and yours. Another year is rapidly drawing to a close and before we know it, Christmas, and New Year’s resolutions, will be behind us. It’s been an unusual year – with many ups and downs – but we’ve come through them all with flying colours. Take time to enjoy the season; spend time with family and friends; eat and drink (both in moderation) and be merry.

From our family to yours – Season’s Greetings, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year. We’ll see you all in 2002!

Treasurer

Welcome and many thanks to the latest addition to our Chapter Executive. John Leitch has agreed to take on the role of treasurer for the chorus. Rod Schlosser has faithfully carried out this role for a number of years and was looking to hang up his calculator. Thanks Rod, for all your work over the past years, and Thanks John for taking on this important role.

Singouts

Well its been a busy Christmas season – with singouts all over town – singing for the Masons, singing in the Carolfest, singing for the Superannuated Teachers, singing at the Legislature Christmas tree lighting, singing at Wascana rehab. I hope you’re all having fun as we entertain our audiences – and letting them know it as well.

We’re all members of this society because of our love of music and our love of singing – and at this special time of the year we have many opportunities to share our love of music with the wider community.

Sing… For Life

From the Bulletin Editor

Well here it is another Sunday evening – the last one of 2001. I’m here typing on my computer putting together the last Sharp Notes of the year. Anyone watching would wonder what I’m doing. I’m running ‘work stuff’ on my laptop, and keep switching from one keyboard to the laptop and back again; and listening to the Mills Brothers singing Christmas Carols over the cable blackbox; and chatting online with my sisters in Ontario – what would our grandparents have thought of all this? The clock downstairs has just struck 8:00. Maybe I should try to get a first draft printed for Elaine to proof. All too often the first draft arrives into the wee hours of Monday morning. But each time it somehow manages to all come together. Hopefully you each find something useful or informative or entertaining – and maybe even a chuckle or two. If so, then I’m happy that the time has been well spent.

So… Merry Christmas to all…

And to all a good night.

I was driving down a lonely Saskatchewan country road one cold winter day when it began to sleet pretty heavily. My windows were getting icy and my wiper blades were badly worn and quickly fell apart under the strain. Unable to drive any further because of the ice building up on my front window I suddenly had a great idea. I stopped and began to overturn large rocks until I located two very lethargic hibernating rattlesnakes. I grabbed them up, straightened them out flat and installed them on my blades, and they worked just fine.
What! You've never heard of...
wind-chilled vipers??

That’s about all we did, as we take the summer off, but I'm sure we'll get some Xmas requests before I leave on the 21st of December.

Happy Holidays!

SPEBSQSA Update

Brainstorming sessions online

Brainstorming sessions were held at the 2001 Leadership Forum earlier this month to list ideas to promote community singing. The results of those sessions are now available on the Society web page at: www.spebsqsa.org/ChapterSupport/2001_brainstorm.htm

AISQC has its own website

The Association of Seniors Quartet Champions (AISQC) now has its web site up! You can access it through www.spebsqsa.org/ People/Subs. You’ll find information about the upcoming Midwinter show, current/past champs, AISQC history and available recordings.

International Dues Increase

At its November 3rd meeting, the Society Board approved a dues increase of US$2 (from US$70 to US$72) effective with December 31 renewals. This is in line with the projected increases that were announced in 1998. Projected increases are 2003--US$4 (US$76), 2004--US$2 (US$78) and 2005--US$2 (US$80) and no projected increase in 2006.

Free 'n Easy Music on the Web

Check it out at www.spebsqsa.org / Arrangements / Free.

In addition to the downloadable sheet music, you can listen to audio samples of selected songs.

Updated Judging Handbook

"What were the judges thinking?" Plenty -- and you'll never need to wonder again, after referring to the 109-page Contest & Judging Handbook, recently updated and posted to the web at www.spebsqsa.org / C&J / handbook.htm.

In addition to the complete rules and category descriptions, delve into the working papers that help set the standards: position papers on embellishment, taste, patriotic and religious music, and more. Get your own official score sheets and score along at your next contest!
