BULLETIN EDITORS FORUM

July 5, 2001, 8:30 a.m., minutes

Submitted by Bruce T. Anderson, VP-Bulletin Editors, PROBE

Vice-President for Bulletin Editors, Bruce Anderson opened the meeting with a welcome and asked all to join him in singing "My Wild Irish Rose."

After the song, each individual in the room introduced himself and told about his bulletin experience.

Two bulletins were distributed. One bulletin contained judging guidelines for Layout and Reproduction judges and the other bulletin contained information as to the proposed changes in the PROBE guidelines. This was in addition to other articles of interest.

VP Anderson then asked those attending to break up into three groups and discuss the three categories of judging and report back to the general group. The comments from the groups are:

Grammar and Style

Judging sheets really need no changes; the only help would be examples of errors or good style.

Content

  • Some re-evaluation dealing with the number of bulletins needed to qualify for contest. Recommend that the number be reduced to four or six.
  • Question on the number of points in the category. Content needs more points.
  • Discussion about weekly bulletins.
  • Electronic media - some chapters use e-mail for their members, but the need for information to friends should be printed. Should this be just a copy of the e-mail version?
  • Comment was made that a weekly or quarterly publication puts you out of the competition.
  • Send bulletins out to the general public. Bulletins sometimes just go out to the public for show announcements or big audiences only. Who is your audience? Members?
  • Editor role is to solicit information for content areas.
  • Discussion about information on the Society Web page for Bulletin Editors.

L & R had no report, just discussion as above.

The meeting was closed and VP Anderson again invited those in attendance to consider becoming a judge and to be sure to attend the PROBE general meeting to be held immediately after the current meeting.
