Bulletin publisher tech talkProduct recommendationBy Grant Carson, EDITOR, BIG D BULLETINI recently upgraded from a PowerMac 1200 (100 Mhz, 16 MB RAM), to a Blueberry iMac (350 Mhz, 64 MB RAM). The blue ones are much better than the red and green ones, of course. We Layout and Reproduction judges understand such things. The PowerMac had an SCSI interface, compatible with my printer and scanner. The iMac has only ethernet and USB. Although my original idea was to buy transducers that would allow my iMac to communicate with my SCSI devices, this simply became too hard. So I bought an Epson Stylus Scan 2000, USB compatible, ink jet. The Stylus Scan prints better than my old printer (1,400 dpi if needed), scans better than my old scanner (easier to produce bulletin photographs, Adobe Photoshop DeLuxe included if you want to tweak the photographs, also has OCR), is a black and white or color copier (you don't even have to turn on the computer), and is a fax machine if you want it to be. That sure does reduce the clutter of peripherals and cables. Now I have only two gizmos, the iMac and the Stylus Scan. The Stylus Scan is $300, and is compatible with either Macintosh USB (not SCSI) or Wintel. If you're considering upgrading your printer or scanner or copy machine, I recommend it.
