MEETING EVERY MONDAY 7:30 P.M.- COME SING WITH US UNTIL 10 P.M.

AT THE FIRST CHRISTIAN CHURCH, 1130 E. WALNUT ST., ORANGE, CALIF.

President's Message
By Dave Gryvnak

Boy, time sure does fly by. Another month has gone by. As a matter of fact, another year has almost gone by. We are going to have our Annual Election in just a few weeks. We will be voting on a new board, and it behooves you to cast your ballot and vote in the new leaders. I have accepted the nomination for President again because I feel that there is something that needs to be done that I did not understand and had not focused on this last year. We can have a lot more enjoyment in our singing if we would get more singing members into our chapter. Just think how much fun it would be if over forty guys showed up each Monday ready to sing. We would have a lot more singers coming in at 6 PM starting to quartet and woodshedding until the start of the regular meeting time. Right now we have about ten to fifteen that do. And with that many singers, we would have a terrific turn out at the afterglow and end up with more than the four or six guys standing in the darkness at the front of Shakey’s singing tags until 11:30. We would have fifteen or twenty. Well, that is my goal; that is my dream. I’d love to be singing with a lot more of you guys, and believe me, you’ll love it too. And we will do it too.

We have a lot coming up in the next few months. First has already happened, the Summer Sing on the 25th of September. At this writing, it hasn’t happened yet, and I hope a good turnout of members will be there. We have always had a great time and Phil and his wife Phyllis are always gracious hosts.

After the election, don’t forget the Installation Banquet on the 6th of Nov. Paul Kelley has worked out a great menu, program and all taking place at Rembrandt’s Restaurant.

Then comes COTS on 13 and 14 of Nov. I’d like all the board to go this year. Fortunately for me, COTS is going to focus on how to increase the membership. There should be some great ideas coming out. I know that most of you guys are like me. I have made a pest of myself to my friends in the past and that well has gone dry. There are no other friends that would be interested. So be it. But there are other people out there that we can collectively contact through other means, such as the newspapers, the internet and the Pennysaver, to name a few. So let's do it.

The next biggie is the Harmony Holiday at the Shrine, 5 Dec from 2:30 on, with MOH, Perfect Gentlemen and Metropolis to name a few performers, and the show is free. It should be a great performance. Mark it on your calendar.

On the 22nd of September, Mike Werner started his raffle. We have some great barbershop CDs and Tapes donated by Dorothy Acton. If you’re at the meetings on time, Mike will give you a ticket and you have a chance at getting one of these terrific recordings. The last meeting Pat Gaston walked out with one of these prizes.

Again I leave you with this: bring someone to barbershop. You’ll be doing him a great favor, you’ll be doing us a great favor and you’ll be doing yourself a great favor. More singers, more fun. If you’re too busy to sing, you’re too busy.

We Have a Slate
And They’re Great.

Vote at our Monday Meeting
By Stanley Tinkle

About 3 a.m. this morning, I awoke to the Santana wind, which was shaking windows and making the trees look like refugees from a wind tunnel. Luckily, I had trimmed our palm tree so that it couldn’t slap any more shingles off the roof. Today’s wind would be a good metaphor for the year ahead. The times they are a’changin’, to quote Bob Dylan, and the Orange Quartet Chapter is ready, thanks to a fine group of volunteers who stepped forward to lead it.

Usually a Nominating Committee has to convince reluctant heroes to take their turns at running the activities of a small group. Not so with the Orange Chapter. Beginning at the top (which is the only way to form a slate, of course), this year’s President Dave Gryvnak decided that this Quartet Chapter needs to publicize itself in the community in order to attract more good singers. So Dave has thrown his hat into the ring for 2005.

We now have a new Board position, which reflects changes in the world around us.

Heeding the directive of the Society that every chapter must have a VP of Marketing and Public Relations, Rich Lewis offered to run for that post. That left a gap in VP Music, which Michael Werner agreed to take on. As Mike moves out of VP Membership, Ken Tillmanns takes charge.

It’s reassuring that this year’s Secretary, Dan Whipple, VP Program, Don Engel and Treasurer, Phil Roth have all offered to maintain our continuity by running again for next year. Member-at-Large Dick Nuttelman likes his job and wants to continue to hear the gripes and tearful stories from members who’d rather not address the Board about them. He assumes that someone out there wants to talk. Don’t disappoint him, fellows.

Dorothy Acton gets a paragraph of her own today. She has turned The Squeezin’s into an audiovisual delight, and she has agreed to continue with it this year. Dorothy’s a skilled rewrite wizard, so our members shouldn’t hesitate to send her their ideas and opinions. She’ll turn your sow’s ear into a silk purse; never fear.

To recap, here is your Nominating Committee’s Slate for the Orange Quartet Chapter Board for 2005. Alternate candidates have had three weeks to step forward, but have maintained a respectful silence. You will vote at the Monday meeting, October 11.

President: Dave Gryvnak
Secretary: Dan Whipple
VP Membership: Ken Tillmanns
VP Music: Michael Werner
VP Marketing and Public Relations: Rich Lewis
VP Program: Don Engel
Member at Large: Dick Nuttelman
Editor, Squeezin’s: Dorothy Acton

Respectfully submitted, etc., etc. by Nominating Chairman Stanley Tinkle.

A Surprise Quartet
Don’t Miss These Guys!
By Stanley Tinkle

Our President Dave Gryvnak received the good news recently that The Stage Hogs Quartet would be visiting us on Monday Sept. 13 to sing a few songs. As you must know if you’ve been 1) alive, and 2) conscious this year, The Hogs are our current So Cal West Senior Champions (they came in second in the regular quartet contest, too). They will compete this month in the Far West District contest in Bakersfield. Their act is a unique combination of classic barbershop, funny songs, and splendid ringing sound. Their tenor, Les Dergan, agreed with Keith Sharpe that the Orange Quartet Chapter would be a good audience for their contest package. So President Dave decided to announce their visit to us all on email, as a secret performance by a surprise quartet. Dave just wanted to see what would happen. He likes to be surprised, too.

Okay, so I’ll brag a little. Bob Clark, who is the bari of The Stage Hogs, is a friend of mine. I proudly “fly” a Stage Hogs bumper sticker on my Pumpkin Van. Bob called to verify their visit, and I gave him Dave’s number. So you see, I did know about the visit in advance, but at Dave’s request, I kept mum. Luckily, all the members of Indigo and Balderdash and Fermata the Blue were present that night, so we could serenade our guest quartet. If you weren’t there, here’s what you missed:

The Stage Hogs. Left to right: Bill Wilson, C.J. Sams, Les Dergan, Bob Clark

The Stage Hogs are all professional musicians from away, ‘way back. C.J. Sams is their lead; his bright and happy voice has graced several popular quartets, including Variety. C.J. also sings and plays Sousaphone (he calls it Bluesaphone) in a duo known as C.J. and Katie (she’s the super banjo lady). He also performs in jazz bands, which may be where he learned his encyclopedic repertoire.

Bill Wilson is a four-part man who sang with Bob Clark for 22 years in Yer Fadder’s Moustache. He now sings mostly bass with The Hogs. Les Dergan, who has directed several barbershop choruses and has performed with Bill, Bob and C.J. as a Dapper Dan, now sings mostly tenor with The Hogs. Baritone Bob Clark, who owns the most envied moustache of two millennia, modestly claims they are all four baritones.

So what distinguishes a first-class quartet like The Stage Hogs? For one thing, they rehearse so carefully that even their “mistakes” are choreographed. At one point in the song “Ragtime Joe”, Bill Wilson announces “Sweet Adeline” and the quartet launches into “Frivolous Sal”. Then they give him a look, and he gives them some attitude: “What!?”—it’s all rehearsed. The Stage Hogs have two mottoes: “The name of the game is to entertain!” and “Clean mind, clean body—take your pick!”

Their synchronized hat work is as impressive as the kicks of a chorus line. So is the “hambone” percussion that Les Dergan does so well. But their unique gift is probably their sense of humor, which often catches the audience by surprise. Consider for example the line in “A Tale of Woe”: “It’s the only thing I didn’t get from you!”

You didn’t get it? Well, maybe you had to be there. And if you’re lucky, some day you will be.
