Dave & Tracey Get Married
(In The Ivy League
Style!).....
If you plan on having a totally
serious wedding, don't have the Ivy League sing for it. Tracey and
family decided that I would be in charge of music for our wedding.
(I guess they felt they should throw me a bone, since I was left out of
all other major decisions). I decided that since I sing with all
these college trained musicians, I would put them to work - plus I was
too poor to hire professionals!
The proceedings started out with
Brian doing a beautiful rendition of "The Wedding Song", accompanying himself
with the guitar.
Next, Bob sang Dan Fogelbergs
"Longer". Brian accompanied on Guitar, with Scott doing the trumpet
solo. That song was going great until the trumpet part. If
you are a horn player, you know that picking up a cold horn and trying
to play a high part really soft isn't a good plan. Other than a
few squawks on the trumpet, the song was great.
My Dad joined the quartet on
the next song with Jim Stevens' arrangement of "Sunrise Sunset" They
were pretty spoiled by my dads booming voice.
The actual ceremony had a bit
of a rough start. My oldest brother Ray and my friend from high school,
Willy Scott, were in charge of rolling out that stupid white paper carpet,
before the wedding march. It sounded like an easy task, but
I guess it's harder than it looks. They were having all kinds of
trouble, and I could see them starting to get snippy with each other.
I guess it should have been a tense moment, but I thought it was funny,
so I started to giggle. It wasn't long before everyone in the whole
church was laughing along with me.
Everything went pretty smoothly
after that. As soon as Tracey came up the aisle, I remembered what
I was there for. She looked stunning. Of course every time
I looked over at the quartet, one of them would make a funny face, to see
if they could crack me up. Brian can do more with his face than anyone
I know. (Can you imagine that?)
Scott blew everyone away when
he sang "The Lords Prayer". The minister usually liked to sing
a song during his services, and he thought he mightduring ours. As
soon as he heard Scott start his song at the rehearsal, he said "I'm not
singing this time."
We really had a blast at the
reception. Those
guys delighted in starting that goblet clinking thing where they don't
stop until the bride and groom kiss. (I have to admit, I started
a couple of them myself..:-) I'm sure I'm one of the few grooms that
actually entertained during the band breaks. The Ivy League sang
and so did my high school doo-wop trio. (Willy, my brother Dan and I)
I know most wedding couples leave early at their receptions, but Tracey
and I were having way too much fun to leave. We stayed until we had to
leave the hall. All the people that I talked to after, said it was
the most fun they'd ever had at a wedding.
