About John Hohl

John Hohl holds a Bachelor of Science in Education (BS in Ed) degree from the State University of New York - Fredonia and a Master of Music (MM) degree from Northwestern University in Evanton, IL.  John retired from the US Department of Transportation after 31+ years of federal service.

John is currently the Associate Musical Director for a BHS chapter, in Washington, D.C.  

John has sung in several barbershop quartets, including two internationally ranked groups - the Nova Chords (two-time bronze medalists) and Vaudeville (1985 Silver Medalist and four time bronze medalists).   In Albuquerque, MN in 2003, he won a three-place bronze medal in the International Seniors Quartet Contest with his quartet – Auld Lang Syne.  John has also directed several barbershop choruses including a third place International finish with the Alexandria (VA) Harmonizers and Fairfax, Richmond, and Fredericksburg, VA and LaPlata and Dundalk, MD

John has served the Society for ten years as a judge in the Arrangement Category and once again from 1996-1998 in the Music Category.  He is active as a quartet coach, faculty member at training seminars and served 4 years as the Mid-Atlantic District Officer for Chorus Director Development.

Several choruses and quartets have performed arrangements by John, including most of the Nova Chords and Vaudeville quaretets repertoires and extensive work for the Alexandria Harmonizers chorus.  Other groups performing Hohl arrangements include the Blue Grass Student Union, Special Feature, Premiere, Bay Rum Runners, Hijinx, Runaway Sound,  Prime Time, Jackpot, Common Bond, Cincinnati's Western Hills Chorus and Toronto's new MegaCity chorus.  Sweet Adelines have also used Hohl arrangements in their repertorie including the Cincinnati's Gem City Chorus, and SAI Queens of Harmony - Savvy and City Lights.
