Teach The Tribesmen To Sing: by Jay Garber

While on a vacation safari to E. Africa, I was surprised one evening to find that the Lodge's entertainment was a local a cappella mixed singing group. The Friends Of Lake Nakuru (made up of 6 men and 6 women) did a few traditional tribal drum chants & dances and then followed with several American spirituals. At the conclusion of the program, I had a chance to talk to some of the men (they knew enough English as I sure don't know any Swahili). The "Director in Management", as his card stated, had heard of barbershop harmony and even remembered he once owned a record. Not wanting to miss a chance in a lifetime opportunity, I got a reasonable range of voice parts and taught them the "Where Is Love?" tag (the only one to which I know all 4 parts). They seemed to really enjoy hearing the overtones and I sure got a kick out of their obvious enjoyment. I can now say that I've heard barbershop sung by quartets from such unlikely places as Russia, China; and now Kenya.
