MIHMBRO CONTEST

Reported by Tom Koch

Well, after an absence of several years (I didn't bother to look it up), our chapter held another Mihmbro Contest at the May 23, 2006 meeting. Please refer back to my "We Perform column in the March-April '06 bulletin for an explanation of"Mihmbro."

As previously explained to the chapter, we hope to hold this contest periodically as part of our overall effort to encourage quarteting. Quartets are to be "pickup" quartets with no more than one registered quartet person in any one quartet. A person can sing in more than one quartet if they sing a different voice part in each.

For this contest we had to bend the rules a bit as we have a shortage of tenors (some of our tenors can not get release from the various institutions to which they have been committed) and some signed up quartet members were absent due to various "frog in the throat" problems. However, we managed to get six quartets to take to the floor, the competition was fierce and we all had a great time.

First up was "The Last Time" with Joe Veltre, bass - Joe DeFilippo, bari - Tom Steimer, lead and Skip Gillis, tenor. Don't make it a last time guys!

Singing second was "The Winers" (or were they the "whiners") consisting of Gary Corpora, tenor - Gordon Knapp, lead - Jay Garber, bass and Tom Koch, bari. Their stage presence included a bottle of Wild Irish Rose

Third to venture forth were the "Melody Men with Bob Cavanaugh, bari - Dick Hammer, bass - Don Redshaw, lead and Gary Corpora, tenor. Seems they had a shortage of hats.

Next up were the "Heavenly Four" consisting Jim Shields, tenor - Joe Veltre, lead - Jay Garber bass and Tom Koch, bari. Heavenly?

Singing fifth was the "XYZ Quartet" Bob Cavanaugh, bari - Joe DeFilippo, bass - Irish Jim McCarthy, lead and Bill Amos, tenor. Seems that Irish Jim failed to letter.
