Greater Pittsburgh Chapter Barbershop Harmony Society Logo Survey
Results of survey conducted by Jim McCarthy during the month of May 2005
In the May/June "The Harmonizer" the Society officially welcomed the new Barbershop Harmony Society logo. [see The new look arrives on page 21 of that issue.] The new logo is being touted as forward-facing, contemporary, fresh and dynamic. The article states that the new logo was designed by nationally recognized marketing professionals and experienced graphic artists. [Incidentally your editor found an almost identical rendition of the "four squiggly line faces" on the cover of a piece of 1951 sheet music in my files.] Surfing the various barbershop web sites indicates a lot of opposition to the new logo from Society members. Locally, members have been heard to comment, "Now our shirts are obsolete... now our Pa license plates are obsolete... etc."
Jim McCarthy decided to poll the members of the Greater Pittsburgh Chapter to access their opinion of the new logo. Jim distributed a survey sheet at the May 17, 2005 meeting. Following are the four quesUons on Jim's survey sheet and the documented results of our member's answers:
Results: (A) 25% (B) 25% (C) 50%
Results: Yes -25% No -75%
(A) Prefer old logo (B) Prefer new logo
Results: (A) 75% (B) 25%
Results: (A) 50% (B) 25% (C) 25%
On Monday June 6, I participated in a live on line conference (webinar) presented by David Haedtler from Society headquarters. The purpose was to present chapter leaders with the new Mission and Vision Statements of the Society. The webinar was in three parts:
1. A formal presentation about the new mission and vision statements.
2. A short interview with Rob Hopkins where he responds to many of the questions that members have been asking about the statements.
3. An opportunity for you to give feedback, both electronically and verbally.
After participating in this webinar I am convinced we need to support the Mission and Vision statements
of the Society, and decide how we can help in "Building a Better World Through Singing."
