Dick is a recent and welcome addition to our bass section. Like many of us, Dick has no formal music background or training; he just likes to sing. He is a long time church choir singer who often thought about getting into Barbershop. After George Mayer joined Dick in the bass section at the Berkeley Hills Lutheran Church choir, George talked Dick into coming to a guest night and we had him hooked.
Dick retired 15 years ago after spending 38 years in sales at J&L Steel. In this respect, Dick is part of a dying breed; that is, someone who spends his whole working career with one company. If my math is correct, Dick started with J&L in the mail room when he was around 18 years old. As a retiree, Dick fills his hours (when not singing) as a Meals-On-Wheels volunteer, enjoys golfing, and woodworking. He uses his manual skills to help out with various repairs around his church.
A native "Pittsburgher," Dick and his wife Lois live in Ross Township. They are very proud of their four sons who have blessed them with 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Welcome aboard Dick! Here's hoping you have a long and enjoyable Barbershop experience.
A Salute to our President, Bob Parker by Tom Koch
It you take the time (and you should) to check the "Chapter Photographs" board at meetings, you may wonder why President Bob Parker seems so happy in the above photo. Would you believe that he isn't actually smiling or laughing; he is solo singing the baritone part to "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" while standing in the parking lot at the Miracle Mile Shopping Center. Now before you start thinking that we need to impeach him for mental disabilities, or you utter some other disparaging remark about Bob being a baritone, I feel I need to explain the background which led to this rather strange happening.
