Are you a ‘shower singer” or a karaoke star?  Do you find yourself humming to songs played while you are on hold, or harmonizing to the tones around you?  Do you like performing for others?  Do you long to be a part of a supportive and diverse group of other women?  Then the Gem City Chorus is the place for you!

Here are some commonly asked questions and answers.

             q.          Do you need to be able to read music?

a.          No, although it is a useful skill it’s not mandatory.  Most of our

learning is done at rehearsal or by a learning tape.  This provides

more than just notes—it also helps with the words, the interpretation

             and pronunciations.

             q.          I actually sing low/high/harmony in my church/community choir.  How

will I know what part I will sing?

a. Are we the chorus for you!  Our style of music has 4 parts—

tenor (traditional female high soprano), lead (traditional female mezzo              soprano ), baritone (traditional female mezzo soprano/alto) and bass

(traditional female contralto/male tenor/male baritone).  Once you are

ready you will take part of a personal vocal audition with the director.

She will determine  your range and the voice part best suited for you.

             q.          What is the time commitment?

 a.         There are weekly rehearsals on Tuesday nights and occasionally

additional periods near competition time when extra rehearsal or

coaching is expected.  Attendance is important although we do

understand that there is life outside of barbershop.

q. Is there a cost involved?

a. Like any hobby, there is some cost.  We pay monthly dues and have

some other expenses including costumes, makeup and some travel

costs.  The financial aspect is discussed in depth at a new member

orientation.  Of course, the chorus does earn fees for singing which,

in turn, can help each member.

q. Do I have to audition (gulp) in front of the chorus?

b. After you have attended the minimum number of rehearsals, learned

an easy song in your part and feel ready you will let the director know

you are ready for the formal audition.  The audition is done by singing

as a part of a quartet in the privacy of the director’s office.  Once you

have sung in a quartet you will feel very confident about joining the

             chorus.
