Mister Sandman
1954 - Words and music by Pat Ballard, arranged by the Dapper Dans and Rod Miller. Made famous by the Chordettes, a barbershop-style quartet of female singers from Wisconsin. They had a huge hit with "Mr. Sandman," a song which topped the charts for several weeks in 1954, completing their switch from women's barbershop pioneers to pop stars. From 1954 to 1961, the Chordettes placed 13 songs in the top 100 and were a very popular singing group. Before this they had won the contest on the Arthur Godfrey Talent Scout TV program and then became regulars on the show. The show's musical director, Archie Bleyer, formed the Cadence record label in 1953 and signed the Chordettes to a recording contract. One bit of trivia: Archie Bleyer is the male voice ("Yehhhhsss?") that is heard in the Chordettes' classic recording of "Mr. Sandman." The Dapper Dans recreate those signature "bell-chords" or arpeggios at the start of the song with the Deagan Organ Chimes. |
