The History of Barbershop Harmony Society
Barbershop Harmony Society, formerly known as The Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, was founded in 1938 when a fellow Tulsa tax attorney, Owen C. Cash happened to meet a fellow Tulsan, investment banker, Rupert I. Hall, while both were stranded when a storm closed the airport. Meeting by chance in a hotel lobby, the men discovered their mutual love for vocal harmony, and together they bemoaned the decline of that American institution, the barbershop quartet.
What is the
Barbershop Harmony Society? It is devoted to promoting, perserving, and enjoying special form of harmony known as barbershop. Technically speaking barbershop harmony is style of unaccompanied singing. With singing with three voices harmonizing to the melody, The Lead usually sings the melody, with the tenor harmonizing above the lead. The bass sings the lowest harmonizing notes and the baritone provides In-between notes, either above or below the lead to make chords specifically, dominant-type or barbershop sevenths that give barbershop its distinctive, "full" sound.
