Truman Room, Marriott Hotel, Kansas City, MO President Toban Dvoretzky called the meeting to order at 8:59 a.m. with the singing of "Down Mobile." These members were present: Toban Dvoretzky, Ed Hartley, Fred Hinesley, John Plazek, Russ Seely, Ken Wheeler (Board); Bill Davidson, Lew DiStasi, Rick Dunaway, Bill Ford, Warren Grant, Richard Holt, Harlan Knoke, Dick Richards, Dave Rislove, Glenn Schilberg, Jim Stone, and George Trigg. ANAHEIM INTERNATIONAL MINUTES Ken Wheeler moved that the minutes of the previous general meeting be approved. Bill Davidson seconded the motion, which passed. MANAGER/TREASURER'S REPORT Ed Hartley presented the Manager/Treasurer's Report. He noted that the report reflected a membership of 1457, a somewhat larger number than we had at the same point in the previous year. Despite the larger number of members, however, our renewal rate was below what it had been in past years. Ed observed that we were in extraordinarily good financial shape with a bank account of about $18,000. He read the names of the following members who had passed away during the previous year: Darrell Bailey C CA; Clarence Beck 90 NM; Peter Charge 79 BABS; Richard Dick 93 MN; Dick Finlinson 90 CA; Bill Laskie C MA; John LeBoldus 83 SASK; Sam Lux C NY; Claire MacLachlan 98 ONT; Dick Moyer 91 IN; George Peters 89 AZ; Donald Staires 94 OK; Bill Stevens 87 WA; Jay Ward C CA; Bob Welter 98 ONT. A moment of silence was held in their honor. Russ Seely moved that the Manager/Treasurer's Report be approved. John Plazek seconded the motion, which passed. ELECTION OF BOARD MEMBERS Dave Rislove moved that Russ Seely and Ken Wheeler be re-elected to serve as at-large members of the Board of Directors for a period of three years. Bill Ford seconded the motion, which passed. Ken Wheeler moved that Ed Hartley be re-elected to the position of Manager/Treasurer. John Plazek seconded the motion, which passed. CANADIAN BANK ACCOUNT President Dvoretzky announced that the Board of Directors had approved the establishment of a bank account in Canada to be administered by Bruce Dibble of Ontario. With the establishment of this account, Canadian members will no longer be penalized by the rate of exchange. AHSOW's financial status will not be affected. INVESTMENT OF FUNDS President Dvoretzky announced that, at the Tucson meeting, the Board of Directors had voted to invest some of our funds in a money-market mutual fund. Ed Hartley has therefore deposited funds in a Vanguard account which will pay 6% interest. NEW MEMBERS President Dvoretzky reported that we had inducted a number of uncommonly capable woodshedders into AHSOW this year. Two of these, Kenny Hatton and Steve Legters, are gold medalists. DISTRICT WOODSHEDDING PROGRAMS We now had chief certifiers in 15 of the 16 districts, President Dvoretzky said. There had been some changes of personnel. In the Sunshine District, Bud Hillier had decided to step down from the post of chief certifier and become an assistant certifier. Bob Folk had assumed the duties of chief certifier. Vin Zito, chief certifier in the Northeastern District, had developed an excellent chapter woodshedding presentation. Members of the Springfield, Massachusetts chapter developed a great deal of interest in woodshedding after he presented it there and asked him to make a return visit. Dr. Lou Chacos, who had experienced numerous health problems and whose wife had passed away following a lengthy illness, had stepped down from the position of chief certifier and become assistant chief certifier in the Mid-Atlantic District. Mike Stoll, the nominee to become District Vice-President of Events, was to assume the duties of chief certifier. In the Johnny Appleseed District, Bob Bokman was still housebound because of the stroke which he had suffered a couple of years earlier and had decided to step down as chief certifier. Ken Wheeler was to assume the chief certifier's duties there. Lee Seligman was to serve as a new assistant chief certifier. No one had yet been selected to serve as chief certifier in the Illinois District. Casey Parker, who had been appointed chief certifier in the Far Western District earlier in the year, was performing outstandingly. Chuck Olson was the new chief in the Evergreen District and Rolf Anderson the assistant chief. A change of chiefs was to be made in the Dixie District. Although a couple of prospects were being considered, a new chief had not yet been appointed. Central States District Chief Tom Millot had announced that he wants to turn his position over to someone else. A very capable person was being considered as his replacement, but no change had yet been made. Hank Hammer, assistant Far Western District chief, was going to move to San Antonio very soon. Finally, President Dvoretzky announced, the title "District Chief Certifier" (DCC) had been changed to "District Educator & Certifier" (DEC) because of the evolution of responsibilities. This was an appropriate change, he noted, because chief certifiers do so much educating on the chapter level and at district schools. VIDEOTAPE PRODUCTION The mini-show "Woodshedding: How it All Began," written by Steve Shannon, had been made into a videotape, President Dvoretzky said. No decision had been made regarding its being made available to the general public, but DECs would have a copy to use as an educational tool. GET-WELL CARDS President Dvoretzky urged members to go by the AHSOW room and sign cards that were to be sent to Lou Chacos, Bob Bokman, and John Grosnick. THINGS "IN THE HOPPER" The Board of Directors, President Dvoretzky announced, had voted to publish hard copies of a newsletter, edited by Bob Folk, for the general membership. There were plans to send future editions by e-mail to those who had e-mail addresses and hard copies to those who could not receive e-mail. A program was being considered, President Dvoretzky announced, which would make it possible to renew membership on-line. Members with e-mail addresses would receive their renewal notices on-line. The notice would tell them of the link to which they could go, and if they wished to do so, they could renew by simply clicking on this link. Those who wanted to renew by sending a check could, of course, do so. The District Chiefs had had the idea, President Dvoretzky said, of taping some heretofore unknown good woodsheddable melodies and making them available to the general public so that they could practice harmonizing to them. At about the same time that this idea was to be undertaken by Dvoretzky and Vice-President Steve Shannon, Mo Rector, who can connect his piano to his computer, conceived the idea of recording the songs in the "Discovery Singing" folio by singing the melody lines while he played the harmony parts at a lower volume on the piano. This would give novice woodshedders an idea of the implied harmonies without teaching them an arrangement. President Dvoretzky urged that members remind their AHSOW friends who are even-year inductees to go ahead and renew. Russ Seely suggested that district bulletin editors be asked to remind AHSOW members that they need to renew if they were inducted in an even-numbered year. President Dvoretzky suggested that we also ask chapter bulletin editors to remind AHSOW members to check the year in which they became members and to renew if they joined during an even-numbered year. There being no further business, John Plazek moved that we adjourn, and George Trigg seconded the motion, which passed. President Dvoretzky announced that we had set a fourth consecutive new record for speedy meetings by completing this meeting in 23 minutes. The group sang "I'm All Alone" in memory of AHSOW Past President Jay Ward, who had recently passed away. Respectfully submitted, Fred Hinesley, Secretary Click here for the minutes of the Board Meeting. |
