Yes - women sing barbershop! Sweet Adelines International is a non-profit organization of approximately 37,000 women worldwide who promote the all-American art form of singing 4-part harmony in the barbershop style. We have choruses in such locations as New Zealand, England, Sweden, Germany, and Japan and now - in Portland, Oregon!
Willamette Sound Chorus (WSC) is a chapter of Sweet Adelines International, a women's barbershop organization specializing in vocal production of various types of music arranged in the barbershop style. WSC is the 2000 Region #24 Championship Chorus. We have approximately 55 members who are very talented and dedicated. Most of our members work full time in a variety of occupations. We are teachers, in the medical professions, engineers, various commercial and business occupations. We are in real estate, insurance, social services, management and technology. We share a common love of singing and performing. We represented Region 24 (western Montana, southern Idaho, southwestern Washington and Oregon) at the 1998 International Competition in Nashville, Tennessee in November, 1998. And Now we will again represent the Region, with pride, in the October, 2001 International Contest in Portland, Oregon! As One of the top scoring mid size choruses in the world, we have been invited to compet ant the July 2001 Harmony Classic Contest to be held at IES
The international organization's goal, and Willamette Sound's priority, is to help singers grow musically through vocal instruction, coaching, learning cassette tapes, and regular rehearsals, utilizing the additional talent within the group. We have gifted Assistant Directors, choreographers, costume designers, vocal instructors, and section leaders. The unique barbershop harmony structure consists of four parts: bass, baritone, lead, and tenor. This is somewhat different than other musical forms such as church choirs or jazz, although we also do some modern jazz-type numbers to add variety to our repertoire.
Sweet Adelines International -- Region #24
Sweet Adelines International has approximately 35 regions worldwide. Our region, Mount-n-Shore Region #24, consists of Oregon, southwest Washington, southern Idaho, and western Montana. Each spring, all regions have a competition to determine who will compete at the International level.
