Chapter Barbershop Harmony Society
|
In August of 2002, we sent out bulletins to all of the churches in lower
Pinellas county inviting their male singers to an all
day workshop where they would be coached and shown skills to take back to their
choirs. The program was successful and was endorsed by the Sunshine District as
an excellent way to promote good singing in the community, and incidentally
promote barbershop style music and also recruit new members. Several church
choir directors were in attendance and the audience ranged in age from high
school students to senior citizens. We plan on doing the same program, with several
refinements, again in 2003. Our clinicians were:
Bill Billings, a former director of the Suncoast
Chorus and baritone of several International finalist quartets. He was the main
clinician, along with Scott Turnbull, our present director and past director of several major choruses
and also a quartet man. “Street Fair” a local quartet experienced in many Youth Harmony festivals was
the teaching quartet.
