The Big River Harmonizers are a group of men from Quincy, Illinois, and the surrounding Bi-state area. We were founded as the Great River Barbershop Chorus in 1966 as a part of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America ( SPEBSQSA) now referred to as Barbershop Harmony Society. After 41 years we decided to change the style of music we will sing. We have decided to concentrate on 50's, 60's, 70's, etc harmony type music. The chorus regularly performs at various community functions and participates in the annual Illinois District Competition. The chorus also performs a Christmas Concert, called the Holiday Singspiration and a Spring Show held in June call the Annual Parade of Harmony.
The Chorus offers one of its favorite treats on Valentines Day. For $40 a quartet from the chorus will surprise your sweetheart with a serenade, roses, candy, and a picture of the occasion. In the summer the chorus will perform its 42nd Annual Parade of Harmony with special guests to be named at a later date.

Barbershop is four-part, a cappella, close harmony singing. The melody is carried in the second part, called the lead. The tenor harmonizes above the melody, the bass sings the low notes, and the baritone sings the "other harmony," sometimes above and sometimes below the melody. Barbershop is a uniquely American art form, sprung from the ear-harmonizers or "wood shedders" of turn-of-the-century America. There are currently 825 chapters and over 2000 registered quartets.
