Jean Barford
Yes, she’s our director but she is also our strongest coach. She is a great singer (International Champion - The Sounds of Music), coach for BHS and Sweet Adelines, director of Gem City and certified Sound Judge. Click here for her current resume.
Bob Moorehead
One half of a mighty coaching duo from Cincinnati is Bob Moorehead. Bob has been a BHS-certified judge in the Sound and Singing categories since 1976. Bob has been a member of Southern Gateway since 1965 and been a tenor with several JAD quartets including Act IV, The Naturals, Rumors. Bob is currently He is married to Edie, baritone of the Sounds of Music Queen of Harmony Quartet. Bob is a highly valued vocal coach for Gem City Chorus and often works alongside his chorus mate and friend, Brian Barford.
Brian. Barford, Ph.D. The other half of our Cincinnati duo is Brian Barford. Brian has been a member of the Southern Gateway Chorus since 1973. Brian started coaching in 1972 and has worked with dozens of quartets and choruses, recently including groups such as BSQ, Fanatix and the Gem City Chorus. A certified Singing Judge (BHS) since 1995, he has participated in over two dozen Top Gun Schools and Harmony Education Programs. Brian currently sings lead in the seniors quartet “Senior Class and is married to Jean Barford, director of the Gem City Chorus and tenor of the Queens of Harmony quartet Sounds of Music,
Joni Bescos
Gem City is fortunate to have Joni Bescos as a coach! Joni joined Sweet Adelines in 1958. She has participated in almost every aspect of barbershop serving as director (Verdugo Hills), singing in many years with the Rich Tones chorus as well as singing both tenor and baritone in several international quartets including Queens of Harmony 4 for the Show. She is the only active judge to be certified in three of the four judging categories – music, sound and expression and is the original author of the Judging Category Description Booklet. Joni was one of the first members to be appointed to the International Faculty and has attained the highest rank available – Certified International Faculty.
As if these are not impressive enough, she is also one of 4 women to hold the rank of Master Arranger. She authored How to Arrange Barbershop Harmony in 1970 which is still used as the standard today. She received Sweet Adelines Lifetime Achievement Award in 1999.
Cindy Hansen-Ellis
Cindy Hansen-Ellis is our primary visual coach and an associate member. She has been coaching men's and women's choruses and quartets since 1981 when she was a student at Western Michigan University. . She now has a "who's who" list of gold medal-winning quartets and choruses on her resume. The changes she institutes range from sound and arrangements to creating "visual packages - "enhansenments." The result is a spirit, a sound - “FIRE” that is pure entertainment. She is a frequent guest faculty at Harmony College (BHS), IES (SAI) and Barbershop at Sea cruises. Cindy recently married David Ellis, tenor of Storm Front Quartet.
