About The Six Foot Four Barbershop Quartet

Our Origin

Ian, Steve, Lecky and James formed "The Six Foot Four" during a rehearsal of the Melbournaires Barbershop Chorus (in Melbourne, Australia) in March, 2000. As we are all at least six foot tall, Steve suggested that we call ourselves "The Six Foot Four".

Our Barbershop Experience

Ian (Lead) is the musical director of the Melbournaires and a former Baritone section leader. Steve (Bari) is the Bass section leader of the Melbournaires. Lecky (Tenor) is the Tenor section leader of the Melbournaires. James (Bass) is a former director of the Melbournaires, and part-time coach and adviser to the Melbournaires. Ian and Steve have sung together previously in the quartet, Yarra Blend. James sang in the quartet, Bon Acchord.

Part-Swapping

Six Foot Four began with James singing Lead, Steve singing Bass and Ian singing Baritone. It wasn't until we received coaching from Wally Coe (from Vancouver, Canada) in September 2000 that we realised that Ian (Lead) and James (Bass) are in fact a good Lead-Bass match. Since then, we have spent most of our time in this combination - Lecky (Tenor), Ian (Lead), Steve (Bari) and James (Bass), although we still sing some songs with James (Lead), Ian (Bari), Steve (Bass) and some songs with Ian (lead), James (Bari) and Steve (Bass). Confused?!

Competitions and Performances

In June 2001, Six Foot Four entered its first competition - The 2001 Eastern Region Competition, which was also the qualifying round for the 2001 Pan Pacific Convention in Melbourne. The quartet succeeded in qualifying for the convention and won a Bronze Medal for the Eastern Region Competition. In the convention, Six Foot Four was awarded the Novice Quartet Trophy and was ranked 5th in Australia. Since then, the quartet has achieved a score of 92 in a local A Cappella competition, performed in a 30-second TV advertisement for Sydney's Lounges and Beddings, and has even traveled all the way to New South Wales for a 90th birthday party!

Acknowledgements

Six Foot Four would like to acknowledge the Melbournaires Barbershop Chorus for the support and encouragement they have given us, and for all their hard work in advertising barbershop harmony to the community. We would also like to acknowledge the Carnie family for kindly allowing us to use their house for rehearsals.
